Prairie Garden Seeds

Saskatchewan/ Humboldt

Prairie Garden Seeds encourages you to grow and save seeds. Grow favas (broad beans)! They are easy to grow and incredibly nutritious! Seed them in the spring in full sun as soon as the ground is soft enough to work. They don’t mind the cool spring and they are quite vigorous growers. Harvest and eat the pods when quite small or the fresh seeds (cooked or raw, peeled or not) when full size, or even wait until the pods dry on the plants (they turn black) and keep the dry beans for cooking. The skins contain most of the strong fava flavour, so if you like that flavour, leave the skins on, if it is too strong for you, remove the skins. The diversity in our collection is amazing, pick your pod length, seed size, seed colour, and more. Do something different this year, try favas!

Heirloom seeds have the advantage over hybrids because you can save some seed from your favourite crops and use them again year after year as has been done for generations. From pots on the balcony gardening to tomato plants tucked amongst the rose bushes to acres of gardens, this is green living at its best: grow your own food, save your own seeds, share the food and the seed and keep the cycle going. It is good taste, it is good value and it makes good sense.

The Cottage Gardener

Ontario/ Newtonville

The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse is a family owned and operated, farm-based seedhouse started by Mary and Dan Brittain. Established in 1996, The Cottage Gardener’s mandate is to provide rare, open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom varieties to both home and market growers. We are committed to bringing our customers the highest quality of seed, fair prices, and fast order processing time.

The world’s genetic biodiversity and food security are at great risk- 93% of the varieties available 100 years ago have disappeared and with them, the unique genetic traits they carried. Planting your garden with heirloom seeds accomplishes many things - you help preserve at-risk seeds, you increase your self-sufficiency by being able to save your own seeds and, on top of that, you get to harvest food that actually has taste! Heirlooms will surprise you with their diversity of colour, shape, size and fragrance.

All our seed is open pollinated public domain. We hope you grow them, save them, and share them with friends. Perhaps start your own little neighbourhood seed bank.

British Columbia/ Delta

West Coast Seeds believes, first and foremost, in the principles of organic growing. Namely, we believe that food and all plants should be grown without the use of synthetic chemicals and that the seeds we supply are an important component within the broader conceptual approach to organic gardening. We believe that growers are custodians of the land they grow on — however large or small — and that by nourishing the soil through organic gardening techniques like composting and crop rotation, the plants they grow will be more vigorous, and less demanding. We believe that food should be grown in healthy soil.

We believe in supplying our customers with the freshest, fattest seed available to us, with the highest rate of germination possible. Our seed is never treated with insecticides, fungicides, or other chemicals which we believe cause more harm than good. In the rare instance when our seeds are coated for easier handling, the coating will be organic and composed of natural ingredients such as clay, molasses, etc.

William Dam Seeds

Ontario/  Dundas

Our seed is not chemically treated. This has been confused with organic seed, which to our knowledge it is not in all cases. We have been purchasing our seed from the most reputable sources available. These companies have growing fields all over the globe and do research to maintain their high standards of quality and new developments. These progressive seed companies maintain a large genetic stock of parent lines (many are heirlooms) for breeding work. We have visited some of the world's foremost seed companies and were impressed by the level of commitment to seed purity and research to bring the best varieties to home gardeners. We are proud to be associated with our suppliers and are confident that the seed we receive reflects their high standards and ours.
We promote sustainable agriculture; that is maintaining healthy soil with natural means so that we don't deplete the soil that we rely on to grow our food. Healthy soil produces healthy plants that can withstand disease and insects so that pesticides are not needed on a regular basis. Hybrids are also beneficial to increasing disease and insect resistance, while providing the gardener with increased yields, flavour, and nutrition.

Populuxe Seed Bank

The Populuxe Seed Bank aims to help preserve genetic diversity. The seed bank helps this by doing the following:

Seeds are stored in cool and cold temperature storage to ensure viability.

The seed bank will grow out as many varieties as possible on a rotating schedule to keep seed viable. Sometimes this will require the help of other growers around the world to grow out a variety or two and then ship a storable quantity of seeds back to me.

Seed collected from grow outs will be distributed as widely as possible before being restored to the bank. Anybody that wants the seed to grow, is welcome to it!

Collect as many rare and family heirlooms as possible to be stored, and to be redistributed to anybody who would like them.

Collect as much documentation and histories on the seeds in the bank as possible so the stories are not lost.

Spread information about how home gardeners can create their own seed banks.
