Essentia Health in the News

Minnesota Public radio aired a segment about Essentia Health’s mandatory flu shot policy.   “About 300 employees of Duluth-based Essentia Health could lose their jobs for refusing to comply with the company’s new mandatory flu shot policy. “Monday is the deadline for the company’s 15,000 employees to get the vaccine, or receive a medical or religious exemption. Essentia says 98 percent have complied. “Scot Harvey is not one of them. Harvey, who lives outside Chisholm Read More …

Proud to be an American

Every Veterans Day I listen to this song by Lee Greenwood and It brings tears to my eyes.  I was in the Military but never saw combat.  I am smart enough to realize that I will never be able to comprehend the magnitude of the sacrifice of those men and women who have stood in combat to protect the freedoms that I often take for granted here in America.   If tomorrow all Read More …

Garden Seed Corn

Thanks to the freezing nights, harvest time is over for us.  Even with the deer eating some of our squash patches we still harvested more squash then ever.   We harvested a very diverse crop of corn.  Some of the corn we tried did not mature here because of  our short growing season but we did pretty good otherwise.

Garden Seeds Mushroom Photos

Miriam started her second year of online school with Blue Sky School on September 5th. For PE she needs to do different physical activities or exercises for so many hours in a week. After she had spent most of the day inside setting up her school area and doing online school work, I came in and told her I found some cool mushrooms I wanted her to come out and take pictures of for me. Flowers at Garden Seeds July 2017

Basswood is traveling around Europe so that leaves his little sisters to take pictures. He did write today to let me know he was Okay.  He wrote, “K.” The girls and I went out to Garden Seeds’ gardens to see if we could get pictures of flowers.   Here we are at the garden gate. Our main garden is fenced to keep the chickens and deer out. We hauled several pickup truck loads of wood Read More …

The Universe Beneath Our Feet

Here is a pod cast that talks about the life in the soil.  There are millions of living things in the soil that are working to help the plants we see above the ground grow.  We can not live without the fungi, bacteria, etc. in the soil.  There is a food web in the soil that consists of the fungi, bacteria, and the roots of plants all working together to feed each other.     Read More …

Working Hard on Our Forest Gardens and Big Brother is Watching

Basswood and I have been working hard on our forest gardens.  We planted over a hundred and fifty trees before the rain started.   In a few years these trees will be food for us and the animals, not to mention all the blossoms for the honeybees.  Around several of the trees Basswood planted what he calls a guild.  He puts a couple of nitrogen fixing plants and a dynamic accumulator or two.  While the Read More …

Landrace Gardening and Permaculture Food Forests Using Perennials: part 1

Over the next few days we want to write about landrace gardening, which is survival of the fittest gardening using landrace seeds and natural gardening techniques.   Basswood spent last summer studying (when the weather would not allow outdoor work) about how to use Permaculture to make Food Forests and landrace gardens. He has learned that every time you disturb your garden soil you kill some of the life in it. There are so many Read More …

GMO in the News

The debate about the safety and risk vs benefits of GMO products is a contentious one. The reason it is so contentious is because there are billions of dollars involved. Russia is betting that more and more countries are going to ban GMO products, and that is why they are rapidly gearing up their production of non-GMO crops. Russia wants to supply the world with a healthy alternative to GMO foods.   We have started Read More …
