Making Permaculture Food Forests for Fun

I ended yesterday’s blog by saying that we work hard in our food forests for the food we are going to get. Well I was wrong. The TED talk on NPR this week was about play and how we each need play time to be mentally healthy. The definition of play they used on the TED talk was that play is something you do for fun and not because you have to, or get paid. Read More …

Visiting: Andrej’s European Pastries – Walnut Potica

The other day on our way back from the compost dump where we had picked up a load of apple tree and other hard wood branches to use in our hugel beds, we stopped at one of the neighbors for a visit. He was born in Czechoslovakia and enjoys natural, farm-raised produce and animals. He encourages us in our natural gardening methods and tells us stories about how he used to raise food and eat Read More …

Where in Guatemala is Basswood

Basswood is always changing his Facebook name.  Last year on his trip to Central and South America, he took buses all the way from Duluth, Minnesota to Ecuador.  (He did have to take a ferry from Panama to Columbia.)  He changed his Facebook name to Ricardo Harvez.  Now he has changed it to Tilo San.  I typed it into Google Translate to see what it meant.  Tilo means Linden, which is another name for Basswood.  Read More …

Basswood Wandering around Guatemala

Basswood has been wandering around Guatemala.  To the casual observer it might appear that he is wandering aimlessly, but he usually has a purpose in the places he chooses.  He spent some time at a Fungus Academy hanging out with people who are also wandering the world looking for something.  After hanging out in the jungle with them for a while he went down to the Caribbean coast. Basswood in the jungle in Guatemala  (Basswood Read More …

Why Basswood Chooses to Wander the World.

Basswood wrote that he is still in San Marcos, Guatemala. He said he met someone on the street that he traveled with three years ago. We live in a small world… Basswood has never met a stranger and the number of people that travel around the world visiting remote villages is really small. Earlier on this trip Basswood said he met someone from Northern Minnesota, near where we live.   Speaking of Northern Minnesota, it Read More …

Basswood is in San Pedro La Laguna

Basswood wrote that he is in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala, where he found a room for under $4 a night. San Pedro La Laguna is on Lake Atitlán, which is a region that he decided he wanted to visit before he left home.   “San Pedro La Laguna (Spanish pronunciation: [sam ˈpeðɾo la laˈɣuna]) is a Guatemalan town on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán. For centuries, San Pedro La Laguna has been inhabited Read More …

New England Trip with Basswood: conclusion

While stealth camping near Mount Katahdin we decided not to try and wake up early to climb the mountain. We had not had cell service for several hours and were unable to check in with my wife and the girls before we went to sleep. The next morning we packed up camp and decided to head for the coast of Maine where we figured we would have an extra day. We drove for a couple Read More …

New England Trip with Basswood: Part 5

We continued on into Maine where we planned on spending most of the time on our trip.  We wanted to travel down the coast and camp by the ocean.  Another one of our goals for the trip was to climb the highest mountain in Maine.  “Mount Katahdin (pronounced /kəˈtɑːdən/, ‘kə-TAH-dən’) is the highest mountain in Maine at 5,270 feet (1,606 m). Named Katahdin by the Penobscot Indians, which means ‘The Greatest Mountain’,[3] Katahdin is the Read More …

New England Trip with Basswood: Part 4

Basswood is in Spanish language school and he wants to speak only Spanish for the next two months.  It sounds like it is hard, but I think he is enjoying himself…  I am going to continue the story about our New England trip. Our ancestors on the Harvey family side, moved from Vermont over one hundred years ago. Basswood really wanted to stop by Harvey Mountain and Harvey’s Lake in Vermont. So, on our trip Read More …

New England Trip with Basswood: Part 2

I wrote part 1 of this on December 26. Sorry I have not continued it before now. This is about Basswood’s trip with me to New England in October of 2014. Part of what we wanted to accomplish on this trip was to visit places where our ancestors settled after emigrating from Europe.  (Basswood visited their towns in Europe when he hitchhiked from Amsterdam down to Turkey a couple of years ago.)  My dad’s side Read More …
