Basswood is still in Quetzaltenango, or Xela, Guatemala, where he is attending a Spanish language school. He sent some messages to say what he has been up to. He said, “I’ve been studying about indigenous languages. There are over six million people who speak Mayan languages.” He has been interested in endangered and extinct languages for years, and what they tell us about where people migrated from. He has tried several times to get me to learn a language, but my brain is too old and tired.
Basswood also wrote, “Did you know that the United States has the fourth largest Spanish speaking population in the world? California would be the 11th largest Spanish speaking country and Texas the 15th,” if they were independent countries.
